George Russell Urges Layout Changes at Madring Following Spanish GP

George Russell has called for layout modifications to the new Madring circuit following the Spanish Grand Prix after finishing fifth behind Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The British driver suffered physical discomfort and strategic disadvantages on the high-downforce, 22-turn layout.

The 22-turn track creates severe physical demands over a 60-lap race distance. Severe kerb strikes through the fast left-right-left chicane after Turns 5 and 6 cause significant head vibration and driver fatigue. Russell stressed that the current configuration severely limits realistic overtaking opportunities despite the preceding straight. Addressing the circuit design, he stated: “Because every circuit needs to have an overtaking opportunity after a bit of a straight, and this one has a tight chicane and the corners that are a real challenge, but it is not pleasant.”

Grid position proved critical to the final outcome. Antonelli secured victory from the front to extend his Drivers’ Championship lead over Russell to 81 points. Despite finishing nearly half a minute back, Russell maintained that his pure race pace matched the leading cars. Evaluated against dirty air and tyre degradation, his baseline performance remained competitive. “The performance was far better than the result, and I think the pace was really strong, among the strongest of everybody out there, so I take those positives, but this was Monaco-esque in terms of qualifying [being important].”

Strategic decisions during a Virtual Safety Car deployment also compromised Russell’s race progression. Most teams committed to a one-stop strategy on hard tyres. Russell elected to pit twice, swapping to medium tyres under VSC conditions before reverting to the hard compound. He detailed the tyre degradation trade-offs: “The hard tyre was by far the superior tyre, and it would have been a big gamble to stay out on the medium, and I thought I had nothing to lose in the end,” concluding, “I think I would have ended up where I ended up anyway, so it is a bit of a shame; it is a very tough track to overtake, which I guess was a bit annoying for everyone.”

As Formula 1 moves toward the Singapore Grand Prix in October, paddock focus remains split between high-downforce setup optimization and long-term allocations for the 2027 engine regulations. Mercedes must address single-lap qualifying deficit while managing mechanical compliance across high-kerb venues.
