Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli holds an 81-point championship lead following back-to-back victories in Monza and Madrid. Team principal Toto Wolff warned against early celebration, citing unpredictable variables across the remaining nine rounds, starting with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The 20-year-old driver has accumulated eight victories this season, building a clear margin over team-mate George Russell, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris trail by over 100 points. Antonelli has led the standings since winning in Japan. However, managing tire degradation and ERS deployment across upcoming venues remains vital to maintaining race pace over qualifying performance.
With nine rounds remaining, the title race shifts to power-sensitive street architectures. Mercedes must balance car floor compliance and aerodynamic development against strategic resource allocation for the 2027 engine regulation shift. Parc fermé rules and cost cap restrictions leave little room for mechanical unreliability or session crashes.
Despite the commanding lead, team principal Toto Wolff highlighted the operational risks that could alter the championship. Wolff warned: “There are black swan events, they can come and you’re losing something out of your hand when you didn’t think it was possible to lose,”
Antonelli echoed this cautious approach ahead of the triple-header in Azerbaijan. He stated: “Yeah, it [the points lead] is great, but we’ve just got to keep pushing, keep delivering the results and just trying to do the best job I can whenever I go on track,”
Maintaining focus on individual track sessions remains his primary goal. He added: “Because, of course, yes, I have a big lead, but you never know what can happen. So just need to be ready for anything and keep maximising every opportunity I get, and then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the year.”
The Italian driver relies on support from his father Marco and the team to stay grounded. He explained: “On my side, as I said many times, I just try to do my best every race, trying to really drive as fast as I can whenever I go in the car. And then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the year.”
