The Story in 60 Seconds

Williams team principal James Vowles stated that Formula 1's cost cap has created a "two-tier championship" rather than leveling the playing field. Speaking ahead of the Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia, Vowles argued that while the regulation achieved financial stability, it failed to provide sporting equity or compress the field. He pointed out that the top four teams now score 83 percent of available points, leaving smaller outfits trapped behind.

Vowles noted that Williams must spend tens of millions on basic operational systems rather than car performance, severely penalizing their development. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur defended the financial cap, arguing it saved several teams from bankruptcy and successfully attracted new commercial investors to the sport.
