Tanner Rainey is headed back to free agency after another brief, uneven stay with the Detroit Tigers, closing a second straight season in which the veteran right-hander showed enough stuff to earn a look and not enough command to keep…
Veteran right-handed pitcher Tanner Rainey has returned to free agency after his minor-league contract with the Detroit Tigers expired at the end of the season. Detroit had previously designated Rainey for assignment on August 31 before outrighting him to Triple-A Toledo on September 2 after he cleared waivers. Rainey chose to finish out the campaign in Toledo rather than immediately elect free agency.
During his brief major-league stint with the Tigers in August, the 33-year-old posted a 3.86 ERA across seven innings but struggled with control, walking eight batters. The former 2019 World Series champion with the Washington Nationals previously signed with Detroit on a minor-league deal in July 2025 and is expected to pursue similar minor-league opportunities this winter.
