Jose Altuve's future as the franchise icon is an uncomfortable Astros question.

Scott Barzilla of Climbing Tal's Hill argues that the Houston Astros must address Jose Altuve's declining defensive metrics and transition him to full-time designated hitter. Altuve has three years remaining on his contract, earning $33 million next season before his salary decreases to $13 million annually in 2028 and 2029.
Barzilla highlights that defensive metrics like DRS, OAA, and FRV have severely penalized Altuve's defense in recent seasons. Moving Altuve to DH presents complications, including managing Yordan Alvarez's outfield workload and finding an everyday replacement at second base among internal options like Brice Matthews, Cavan Biggio, or Nick Allen.
