Alex Cora has reportedly informed Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski that he plans to take the 2027 season off. Cora was considered a prime speculative candidate to take over as Philadelphia's manager, but he has opted out of managing next year. The Boston Red Sox fired Cora in April but remain obligated to pay his reported $7.25 million salary through 2027.
Taking another managerial job would have offset what Boston owes him, leaving little immediate financial incentive for a return. Meanwhile, the Phillies have not yet committed to a permanent managerial decision after interim manager Don Mattingly led the club to a playoff berth following the firing of Rob Thomson.
