Padres win Game 1 in NL Wild Card Series, shut out visiting Chicago Cubs 8-0

The San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-0 in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series at Petco Park. Starting pitcher Michael King led the defensive effort, while Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning to give San Diego an early 2-0 lead.

Xander Bogaerts added a solo home run, and Jackson Merrill drove in two runs with a double to break the game open in the fifth inning. Joe Musgrove closed out the blowout victory on the mound, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
