The Mariners hold a $240 million contract option on Julio Rodríguez that will require a decision in 2028. What should they do?

Zachary Rymer argues that it is premature for the Seattle Mariners to worry about Julio Rodríguez's upcoming contract decision after the 2028 World Series. Under the terms of his extension, the Mariners hold an eight-year club option currently valued at $240 million. While recent inconsistency and a difficult 2026 campaign have raised concerns, Rymer believes the franchise is still very likely to exercise the option.
Rodríguez posted a 103 OPS+ and 2.8 rWAR in 2026 following a July concussion, alongside defensive regression in center field. However, Rymer notes that a managerial change following Dan Wilson's tenure, combined with rising market salaries, still makes retaining the 25-year-old outfielder at an average annual value of $30 million a sensible move.
