The Washington Nationals designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas for assignment on Friday. His spot on the 40-man roster was given to left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartin, whom the team recently acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants.
Nicolas, who joined Washington from the Baltimore Orioles in July, struggled with a 5.36 ERA across the past two seasons. The Nationals have five days to trade him before placing him on waivers, and any claiming team must carry him on their 2027 Opening Day roster because he is out of minor league options.
