The negotiations between Detroit and its All-NBA center went sideways. Will their be lasting damage?

Center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons resolved a summer-long stalemate by agreeing to a five-year, $200 million contract extension just ahead of the qualifying offer deadline. The agreement followed intervention from team owner Tom Gores, who promised Duren and his family an improved experience after months of fraught negotiations, communication issues with basketball operations president Trajan Langdon, and a rejected weight clause.
The standoff reportedly stemmed from Detroit's concerns regarding Duren's conditioning and a significant dip in his postseason performance, prompting initial offers starting at $175 million rather than a full five-year, $287 million maximum deal. Duren had strongly considered signing a one-year qualifying offer before entering unrestricted free agency, where rival teams including the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks had reportedly expressed interest in offering maximum contracts.
