The Story in 60 Seconds

Tensions between MLB and the players' union are escalating over the push for a salary cap ahead of the upcoming collective bargaining agreement negotiations. Prior to Game 1 of the World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, commissioner Rob Manfred stated owners are unified in wanting a cap, arguing small-market success is rare. In response, union chief Bruce Meyer called a salary cap a tool to suppress salaries and argued the current matchup proves the existing system functions well.

Bill Shaikin warns that the entrenched positions make a December lockout likely and jeopardize Opening Day next March.
