The Dallas Mavericks have emerged as a leading contender to sign guard Walter Clayton Jr. on a two-way deal if he clears waivers on Wednesday. Clayton was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies as they trimmed their standard roster from 17 players to 15. Dallas opened a two-way roster spot by waiving John Poulakidas, and head coach Dusty May previously recruited Clayton in college.
The Sacramento Kings are also interested in signing Clayton following a season-ending Achilles injury to Ben Simmons. Selected 18th overall in the 2025 draft by the Utah Jazz, Clayton was dealt to Memphis in February and averaged 7.8 points and 4.0 assists in 69 games as a rookie.
