Coach Mitch Johnson defended Victor Wembanyama following the star's difficult shooting performance in the San Antonio Spurs' 116-104 season-opening loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama shot just 1-for-13 from the field and missed all four of his 3-point attempts, though he finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Speaking postgame, Johnson stated that the entire team struggled equally and refused to place sole blame on his star player.
Johnson noted that the Spurs appeared overly amped up, poorly connected, and failed to channel their energy properly after falling behind by 24 points in the first half. While acknowledging that Oklahoma City played a cleaner game, the Spurs now look ahead to the remaining 81 regular-season contests.
