The Carolina Panthers have integrated run-pass options (RPOs) as a foundational scheme under head coach Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik. The approach received national attention following a 32-26 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 4, where quarterback Bryce Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Canales noted the scheme is not a new addition but an ongoing staple that originated from concepts he studied under Urban Meyer at Utah over two decades ago.
Carolina's system relies on Young making reads from the pistol formation to manipulate zone defenders into conflict while creating space for running back Chuba Hubbard. Against Detroit, Young completed a career-high-tying 14 in-breaking throws for 160 yards and a score. While Canales acknowledged man-to-man defense best counters the scheme, the Panthers adapt their weekly play-calling to exploit specific defensive coverages and maintain complementary offense.
