The Story in 60 Seconds

NFL scouts are preparing for a substantial number of fourth-year seniors to return to college football rather than entering the 2027 NFL Draft, according to reporting cited by Justis Mosqueda. The trend stems from the NCAA's "five-for-five" rule, which grants student-athletes five full years of playing eligibility regardless of whether they redshirted. Consequently, traditional seniors who played four consecutive seasons retain an additional year of college eligibility.

Mosqueda's analysis found that only 17 of the top 100 consensus prospects have completely exhausted their eligibility, led by Mississippi quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. The remaining 83 prospects must actively declare to enter the draft. Mosqueda suggests that substantial NIL roster payouts reduce the financial urgency of going pro early, which could dilute the 2027 draft class while significantly strengthening the 2028 class.
