Big Nikishin Trade to Rangers Fell Apart, But Carolina Still Wants Hellebuyck

A proposed trade sending restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin from the Carolina Hurricanes to the New York Rangers fell through earlier this offseason, according to Elliotte Friedman. Although the two teams established the framework for a permanent deal, the trade collapsed when Nikishin and the Rangers could not reach an agreement on a contract. The defenseman was reportedly seeking a five-year contract worth around $9 million per season.

Carolina's asking price for Nikishin remains high, reportedly around two first-round draft picks or equivalent talent. Friedman also reported that the Hurricanes remain interested in acquiring goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, with Nikishin's agent granted permission to speak with other clubs to potentially facilitate a three-team trade.
