The Devils are just under the NHL salary cap -- if they plan on making another move or bringing up a player prior to the end of the 2026-27 season, they'll need to shed space.

JP Gambatese of Pucks and Pitchforks argues that trading defenseman Brenden Dillon represents the simplest salary cap-clearing solution for the New Jersey Devils. Following the acquisition of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, New Jersey sits just over $100,000 under the cap while carrying only 12 forwards. The writer contends that moving Dillon would allow the Devils to build roster flexibility ahead of the 2027 NHL Trade Deadline.
Dillon carries a $4 million cap hit and a limited 10-team no-trade list, recently sitting as a healthy scratch. Gambatese suggests offloading the 35-year-old for draft capital or prospects could open over $2.5 million in net cap space.
