New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe has repeatedly emphasized that his team must learn to generate offense from the middle of the ice. Following a 4-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Monday, Keefe noted that playing inside does not come instinctively to many players on the Devils roster, resulting in offensive fatigue and limited high-danger opportunities against top defensive structures.
Despite having skilled playmakers such as Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier, the Devils managed only two 5-on-5 goals over their opening 12 periods. Keefe cited Anthony Mantha's net-front presence on a Dougie Hamilton goal against the Philadelphia Flyers as an example to build on, emphasizing the need for multiple layers of attack in practice.
