The New York Islanders host the New Jersey Devils at UBS Arena for their home opener following a 2-1 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs. New York enters the matchup having built a 7-0-1 record over their last eight games against the Devils, whom they swept last season. Head coach Pete DeBoer is reshuffling his forward lines to boost offense, especially with Mathew Barzal currently sidelined.
Goaltender Ilya Sorokin is scheduled to start after posting a 3-0-0 record, a 0.99 goals-against average, and a .971 save percentage against New Jersey last season. Additionally, Matthew Schaefer will become the youngest player in Islanders franchise history to wear an alternate captain's letter.
