The Ottawa Senators head into their 2026-27 season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs facing defensive uncertainty due to injuries. Key right-shot defenseman Artem Zub will miss the start of the season with a lingering knee injury, though general manager Steve Staios indicated he will not be far behind. Star defenseman Jake Sanderson is expected to be ready for the opening contest.
Thomas Chabot, newly named team captain, will lead the defense alongside Sanderson, Jordan Spence, Tyler Kleven, and Nikolas Matinpalo. Carter Yakemchuk is expected to complete the top six, while Cameron Crotty and Hoyt Stanley remain options for added depth.
