Going into training camp, you always want there to be some healthy competition. The Philadelphia Flyers didn’t have that this year. Sure, there were battles among players to see where they’d slot into the lineup, but there weren’t really any…
Ryan Gilbert argues that the Philadelphia Flyers erred by entering training camp with a rigid, preset roster mindset rather than fostering genuine competition. General manager Danny Briere acknowledged the limited preseason schedule encouraged a set plan, but Gilbert contends that standouts Cole Knuble and Jett Luchanko earned roster consideration despite the constraints.
Gilbert points to injuries sustained by Denver Barkey and Nikita Grebenkin as missed chances to reward young talent. Instead of keeping a dynamic young forward like Luchanko on the roster, the team opted for veteran depth such as Garrett Wilson, which Gilbert views as an avoidable mistake.
