The Story in 60 Seconds

The Hockey News' William Espy argues that the San Jose Sharks' early-season success is unsustainable due to persistent struggles during 5-on-5 play. Despite a solid overall record driven by special teams, the Sharks have scored only 16 even-strength goals compared to 20 in other situations through their first 12 games. Espy notes they are tied for the sixth-fewest goals for and sixth-most goals against at even strength.

Head coach Ryan Warsofsky highlighted the need for improved chemistry, neutral zone speed, and puck support, but Espy contends little progress was seen during their recent six-game road trip. Macklin Celebrini leads the team with just six even-strength points, while Tyler Toffoli, Michael Misa, and Jacob Trouba have five each. Furthermore, fourth-line regulars Barclay Goodrow, Zack Ostapchuk, and Ty Dellandrea have yet to score at even strength.
