Luca Cagnoni has officially earned a spot on the San Jose Sharks' opening night roster, general manager Mike Grier confirmed. The 21-year-old defenseman called the achievement a "special moment" after learning the news during the preseason trip to play the Vegas Golden Knights. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky and forward Macklin Celebrini praised Cagnoni's work ethic and poise with the puck entering the season.
Cagnoni is expected to serve as the Sharks' top power-play quarterback alongside Celebrini, Will Smith, Igor Chernyshov, and Alex Wennberg. The blueliner, who recorded 43 points in 67 AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda last season, is slated to start on the third pairing alongside Dmitry Orlov as he aims to generate offensive production.
