Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller addressed John Tavares's week-to-week lower-body injury ahead of their matchup with the New York Islanders. Tavares sustained the injury during a 5-4 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. While initial concerns hinted at a potential season-ending issue, the club confirmed he is expected to return in a matter of weeks.
Hiller acknowledged the setback alongside the recent absence of veteran Chris Tanev, noting that the team plans to give youngster Easton Cowan increased minutes to compensate. The 36-year-old alternate captain Tavares had scored two goals and seven points across seven games for Toronto this season before the injury.
