Capitals Have Perfect Ovechkin Replacement in Lightning Star

Writer Nestor Quixtan argues that Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov represents an ideal replacement for Alex Ovechkin, who is expected to retire after this season. With Kucherov reportedly requesting a trade after turning down a four-year contract extension, the Capitals are viewed as a potential destination. Quixtan suggests Washington could assemble a compelling package using draft capital alongside young prospects like Ilya Protas and Ivan Miroshnichenko.

However, the article notes that salary cap constraints pose a major obstacle for the Capitals in pursuing the elite forward. With only about $2.4 million in projected cap space for 2027-28 and Ryan Leonard's upcoming $10.5 million annual cap hit, Washington would need to make substantial roster moves to afford Kucherov's anticipated contract.
