‘This has been a long process’: Alexander Nikishin ends holdout with Hurricanes, signs one-year contract extension after previously requesting trade

Defenseman Alexander Nikishin has officially ended his holdout by signing a one-year, $3 million contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes. The agreement comes after Carolina had already played 13 games of the regular season. Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky confirmed the deal, noting that the team is glad to welcome back Nikishin after what he described as a long process following the team's Stanley Cup championship last season.

Nikishin had previously requested a trade shortly after the previous season concluded and missed training camp as a restricted free agent. After trade discussions involving teams such as the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues failed to materialize, Nikishin opted for the short-term deal. The contract allows him to become eligible for salary arbitration and offer sheets next summer if he plays at least 10 games this season.
