49ers GM John Lynch explains how scouting, coaching and data help San Francisco find late-round gems like Gracen Halton and other rising stars.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch explained on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast that organizational alignment is the key reason the franchise excels at selecting late-round draft picks. Lynch emphasized that when the team's scouting department, research and development staff, and coaching staff all agree on a prospect, the 49ers convert on draft selections at a remarkably high rate.
Lynch pointed to recent defensive rookies Jaden Dugger and Gracen Halton as examples of finding players who specifically fit their scheme needs, including added length and attacking styles. He also referenced quarterback Brock Purdy, noting that while luck played a role, strong evaluations and synergy across the coaching and scouting departments enabled the franchise to identify his upside.
