The Story in 60 Seconds

Lothar Matthäus has publicly backed Niclas Füllkrug for a recall to the Germany national team following his strong form for Werder Bremen. Currently on loan from West Ham United, the 33-year-old forward is joint-top of the Bundesliga scoring charts with six goals after netting a brace against Paderborn over the weekend. Writing in a column for Sky Germany, Matthäus argued that Füllkrug has rediscovered his form and confidence in Bremen.

Matthäus suggested that Füllkrug's experience would provide valuable depth off the bench for manager Jürgen Klopp's young squad. While noting that the final selection rests with Klopp, Matthäus highlighted that younger players remain inconsistent. Füllkrug has scored 14 goals in 24 caps for Germany, with his last appearance coming in June 2025 ahead of their upcoming fixture against Serbia.
