The RFU and Premiership Rugby have distanced themselves from an immediate cross-border merger involving Welsh regions. Their response follows reports that the Welsh Rugby Union expressed interest in having its regions join the English Premiership, with English rugby leaders confirming their resources are strictly dedicated to expanding the top flight domestically.
Premiership Rugby currently operates with 10 clubs following several recent financial collapses. Organizers maintain a provisional plan to expand back to 12 teams with domestic clubs by the 2029–30 season.
