Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk was involved in a heated press conference exchange on Wednesday with De Telegraaf reporter Valentijn Driessen. The confrontation arose following criticism of the team's World Cup exit in the round of 32 against Morocco, after which former manager Ronald Koeman departed and was replaced by Xavi.

Driessen previously accused Van Dijk and Koeman of betraying the national team's identity by shifting to a back five. Van Dijk dismissed claims that he pushed for the tactical change as utter nonsense, defended against assertions that he destroyed Dutch football, and was speaking when a press officer intervened to halt the discussion.
