The star playmaker nears a return to the ice following a missed season opener, forcing the Islanders to navigate roster constraints and defensive depth before his activation.

New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal is expected to return to skating late next week, likely on Thursday or Friday. The 28-year-old playmaker missed the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs due to left knee inflammation and has been ruled out for upcoming games against the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers.
Barzal was placed on Injured Non-Roster, meaning the Islanders can activate him once roster-compliant. General manager Mathieu Darche previously indicated Barzal would need several practices before returning to game action, during which Cal Ritchie will serve as the second-line center.
