Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has reflected on being overlooked for the national team's head coach role in 2016, stating he felt there was an underlying motive behind the decision. Shastri, who served as India's team director from 2014 to 2016, believed he deserved the job on merit before the Cricket Advisory Committee chose Anil Kumble instead.
The 2016 selection sparked a public fallout between Shastri and committee member Sourav Ganguly, who was absent during Shastri's video interview. Following Kumble's resignation after a single year, Shastri eventually took over as head coach from July 2017 until November 2021.
