Clapping erupted in the audience at the Wyandotte County Unified Government special meeting Thursday night after a last-minute ordinance switch.

The Wyandotte County Unified Government unanimously voted Thursday night to retain its approval powers regarding the Kansas City Chiefs stadium STAR bond. The board passed its own ordinance exempting the county from state stipulations that would have removed existing local safeguards. The decision preserves the local government's authority over boundary changes and specific funding plans affecting the county.
Additionally, Mayor Christal Watson was appointed to the Kansas Sports Facilities Authority, which oversees the planned stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, and the practice facility in Olathe. Watson noted that the county remains in active negotiations to ensure local community benefits.
