The Story in 60 Seconds

Calgary Flames defenseman Zach Whitecloud has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a potential trade target, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. Pagnotta reported that the Maple Leafs have made exploratory inquiries to bolster their blue line following an injury to defenseman Chris Tanev. The trade speculation comes as Calgary has struggled to open the 2026-27 NHL season, losing their first five games under head coach Ryan Huska.

Whitecloud was originally acquired by Calgary general manager Craig Conroy from the Vegas Golden Knights in January 2026 in a deal involving Rasmus Andersson. An undrafted defenseman who won the Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023, Whitecloud is currently playing under a six-year, $16.5 million contract extension signed in 2021.
