Canada defeated Chile 1-0 at BMO Field on Saturday night to start their new World Cup cycle. Jonathan David scored the lone goal of the match in the 12th minute, converting a rebound from close range after an initial attempt by Cyle Larin was saved by goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.
Chile were reduced to nine players after Lucas Cepeda received a straight red card for a foul on Richie Laryea and Gabriel Suazo was dismissed following a second yellow card. Head coach Jesse Marsch noted post-match that Canada started strongly and created early chances before securing the win.
