The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Sunderland executive Charlie Methven has criticized major shareholder Dermot Desmond and the Celtic board for accumulating cash reserves rather than investing supporters' money into redeveloping the Celtic Park Main Stand. Speaking on the Business of Sport podcast, Methven questioned why the stadium remains neglected while Celtic hold tens of millions in the bank and struggle in European qualifying.

While Methven estimated the club's cash reserves at £90 million, official figures showed £66.4 million in June 2026. Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson previously stated at the 2022 AGM that completely rebuilding the South Stand could cost up to £100 million, though no firm redevelopment plans have been established.
