The Story in 60 Seconds

The San Francisco Giants have traded left-handed relief pitcher Reiver Sanmartin to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Minor League right-handed reliever Robert Cranz. Sanmartin had previously been designated for assignment on Monday as part of roster cuts down to 40 players, allowing San Francisco to secure a return instead of losing him for nothing.

Cranz, a 23-year-old drafted in the seventh round in 2024 out of Oklahoma State, reached Triple-A in 2026 after pitching effectively across High-A and Double-A. Despite struggling in his brief Triple-A stint with a 13.11 ERA, Cranz features a fastball averaging 95.2 mph alongside a cutter and slider, and he is expected to provide bullpen depth for Triple-A Sacramento.
