The Houston Rockets secured a season-opening victory against the Dallas Mavericks behind an accelerated offensive pace following the return of point guard Fred VanVleet. Houston totaled 128 points, including 29 fast-break points, with both Jabari Smith Jr. and Kevin Durant contributing 30 points each in the revamped system.
VanVleet missed the entire 2025/26 campaign, and his return allowed the Rockets to push the tempo and generate easier scoring opportunities. The faster transition style alleviated late-clock isolation pressure that previously affected Durant and center Alperen Sengun, while strengthening Houston's ability to capitalize on defensive rebounds.
