The New York Islanders have started the 2026-27 season off well, posting a 5-3-1 record through their first 9 games of the season.

New York Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche provided a status update on injured star forward Mathew Barzal during Wednesday's team practice. Barzal has missed the team's first nine games of the 2026-27 season due to knee inflammation originally announced prior to training camp. While the 29-year-old forward has resumed skating individually, he has not yet participated in full team practices.
Head Coach Pete DeBoer emphasized that the Islanders will not rush Barzal back into the lineup, distinguishing his recovery from other roster setbacks. The team is also navigating injuries to forwards Matias Maccelli and Cal Ritchie, who are both facing multi-week absences ahead of an upcoming three-game road trip.
