French back ‘elitist’ Champions Cup

French league president Yann Roubert has voiced support for reducing the Investec Champions Cup from 24 teams to 16. English clubs are reportedly leading proposals for the revamped format, which would eliminate the pool stage and feature two-legged knockout rounds. Roubert stated that shrinking the field would create a more elite competition, suggesting each of the three major leagues provide five or six qualifying clubs alongside the reigning tournament champion.

The proposed overhaul raises questions regarding the long-term inclusion of South African franchises, who joined European Professional Club Rugby competitions through the URC in 2022. Although the Sharks won the Challenge Cup in 2024, no South African side has advanced past the Champions Cup quarter-finals. The current agreement remains in place until 2030, with future format negotiations expected within EPCR.
