Carolina’s Hellebuyck Pursuit Just Got a Lot More Complicated

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on the FAN Hockey Show, the Carolina Hurricanes are engaged in ongoing trade discussions to acquire Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Carolina views Hellebuyck as an upgrade in net, but a direct trade is complicated by his willingness to sign a long-term contract extension with the team.

A previous trade agreement sending Carolina defenseman Alexander Nikishin to the New York Rangers collapsed over contract demands of around $9 million per season across five years. Carolina is now reportedly exploring a multi-team trade involving clubs like the St. Louis Blues or Nashville Predators, potentially using Nikishin to facilitate a permanent trade for Hellebuyck.
